Treatments and home remedies to cure and reduce Keloid size

Natural remedies for keloid treatment

Keloid, also spelt as cheloid - is the abnormal growth of fibrous tissues that usually occur when the skin suffers an injury. It usually extends beyond the margin of the injury and can even keep growing with passage of time. Most scientists believe that keloids cannot form on their own, and that growth can be associated with a very minor injury like an insect bite or an acne scar. Keloids are not contagious, but they can be accompanied by severe itching and occasionally pain too. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for keloids that works 100 per cent. All the treatments are tentative, and vary in effectiveness. There are many invasive but more effective treatments like surgery, laser, excision, steroid injections, and cryosurgery. However, the problem with these treatments, especially surgery, is that keloids can recur and become larger.

There are some other remedies for keloids like compression, which can reduce the size of keloids. You can use a bandage, silicon gel pad or a paper tape to apply pressure on the keloids 24 hours a day, for almost a year. This can make the keloids smaller. Applying a collagen cream on the keloids can also minimize the effect over a period of time. You should also include enough Vitamin C in your diet, as it restores the collagen and other connective tissues in the body. Citrus fruits like oranges, sweet lime and lemon are rich sources of Vitamin C. Applying vitamin E oil on the keloids everyday may also help. Some researchers also claim that applying the serum of land snail is effective in treating keloids. Land snail secretions are said to have properties that repair damaged cells and regenerate tissues.

There are some natural products that also help in reducing the size of keloids. One of the easiest remedies is application of apple cider vinegar. If your skin reacts badly to apple cider vinegar, dilute it with water before applying it on the growth. You can also apply crushed garlic, as garlic oil is effective in healing the skin. However, if this gives your skin a burning sensation, wash it off with water immediately. Aloe vera gel applied on old scars everyday may also help restore the skin somewhat. Regular application of honey for a few weeks is said to cure deep scars or keloids too. Sometimes keloids on chest are also a result of acne; if your wife has keloids because of acne, applying diluted tea tree oil may reduce the size of the keloid. Please note that it’s easier to treat newer keloids than the older ones, which take slightly longer to heal.
