Lip Piercing Care:

Piercing your lips may seem to be a great idea, but if you don’t take proper care of your piercing, you may not enjoy your new look.

Lip piercing healing takes about 4-6 weeks and because our mouth has a natural ability to fight off infection, there is very little chance of your getting a lip piercing infection.
Lip piercing care is very important, especially when your piercing is just new. You might experience swelling, scabbing, soreness and redness.

However, you do not have to be alarmed. These are just side effects of the piercing and will go away in time as the healing process begins.

Here are some quick lip piercing aftercare tips:

  • Just after the piercing, avoid eating  drinking or smoking as it may aggravate the piercing. Follow this for at least the first three hours immediately after the piercing.
  • Do not take intoxicating substances like alcohol, tobacco or drugs. Avoid them until your piercing gets healed completely.
  • Take a ball of cotton and dip it in hot saline water. Give yourself a hot compress with the saline water. Move the jewelry around to get the hot saline water into the piercing so that the wound is relaxed.
  • Give more care to oral hygiene so that food doesn’t get lodged in the wound and cause lip piercing infection.
  • Avoid oral sex till your piercing is completely healed.
  • Take some throat lozenges that are anti bacterial or anti inflammatory. This will reduce swelling in your mouth and also prevent you from getting any lip piercing infection.
  • As part of your lip piercing care, avoid sharing your food utensils, so that you do not spread any infection.
  • Eat cold or frozen foods like yogurt, ice cream or suck on ice so that the swelling subsides more quickly.
  • Take a lot of vitamin B to quicken the healing process. Try taking both vitamin B and zinc well before you plan to get your lips pierced.
  • If you are serious about your lip piercing care, avoid removing or replacing your new lip jewelry before your lip is completely healed. The piercing may heal quickly and you may not be able to insert the jewelry back again.
  • It is a good idea to keep cleaning lip piercing area, however make sure that your hands are clean. Clean it completely using some antibacterial soap or cleanser. There might be some debris that gets colleted in the affected area everyday. Clean the area twice everyday and remove the debris regularly in order to avoid any lip infections such as lip piercing scar.
