Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is a chronic scalp condition that is manifested by the presence of white flakes.

The scalp may be red and itchy. Knowing what causes dandruff would be beneficial for one to be able to prevent and minimize its occurrence.

Dandruff is chronic, despite treatments. This can only be minimized or controlled.

There are internal and external conditions thought to trigger dandruff. The internal conditions are stress, anemia, poor diet, physical exhaustion, allergies, heredity, and hormonal imbalance. External causes that can trigger dandruff are the improper use of hair care products, frequent shampooing that leaves the scalp dry or inadequate rinsing, cold weather, and excessive use of hair dryers and blowers.

Seborrhea capitos or the excessive production of sebum or oil leads to dandruff; it is also agreed that the Pityrosporum ovale fungus on the scalp causes the excessive shedding of the cells. When the scalp is oily, it provides the best environment for the fungus.

During severe winter months, dandruff scales appear. These are small or wide flakes that attach to the scalp. This can be removed manually, but redness and infection may occur the flakes are well entrenched in the scalp. These flakes may even appear on the eyebrows, beard, and spread to the shoulders and neck.

Scalp folliculitis exhibit crusted pustules. In the case of psoriasis, the plaques are thick and spread to the ears and occipital area. Sometimes nail pitting or nail dystrophy will occur.

In cellulitis of the scalp, the masses are wet to the touch and tender. The condition is linked to acne keloidalis and is prevalent in black patients. Hair loss at the occiput will be experienced. With Discoid lupus, there are also well-defined patches that cause scarring and eventual hair loss. The condition spreads centrifugally.

Vitamin B deficiency and polycystic ovary syndrome that causes hormonal imbalance can also trigger dandruff. Medications like Risperdal, Risperdal M-TAB, and Risperidone are likely to trigger dandruff. These are medications used to treat schizophrenia.

There are medications that contain substances, chemicals, or toxins that likewise cause dandruff. Sometimes these are overlooked when determining the real reason for the scalp condition.

The use of combs of patients with dandruff caused by fungus or ringworms can cause dandruff in other people.

Skin photosensitivity or abnormal responses to direct sunlight and even artificial light can cause the skin or scalp tissues to react differently. With this condition and prolonged exposure to heat, dandruff will develop.

When seeing a dermatologist for a dandruff cure, be sure to provide the medications being taken. This will eliminate the misdiagnosis of the dandruff condition and eliminate other possible causes of the dandruff.
