Acne Scar Removal

Acne scars are either pitted scars or pigmented scars.

Pitted scars generally take the shape of ice-pick depressions and are left behind once the acne has cleared while pigmented scars are typically red or brown discolorations.

Ablative lasers are used in acne scar resurfacing procedures to remove scarred tissue and tighten dermal collagen. In recent years, skin resurfacing using carbon dioxide lasers has gained recognition as they instantly vaporize undesired scar skin tissue and stimulate the growth of new collagen.

These surgeries are relatively expensive but require less sessions as compared to other cosmetic procedures (in most cases, only one session is required). Post operation care is essential as the injured skin in raw and therefore susceptible to infection. It can take a few months for your skin to heal completely and so various daily treatments are necessary to protect your skin from sunlight and dust. There is a very serious risk of permanent hyper pigmentation and you should discuss the risks in detail with your doctor before undergoing this surgery.

Acne Scarring

Dermabrasion is a cosmetic non-surgical acne scar procedure for individuals suffering from pigmented acne scarring. Previously dermabrasion procedures made use of an electric sander to remove the upper layers of the skin. Modern dermabrasion procedures employ lasers which minimize the damage to healthy tissue as well as ensure a shorter recovery period. Microdermabraison is based on the same basic principles as dermabrasion but is a lot less invasive. While dermabrasion removes several layers of your facial skin, dermabrasion aims at exfoliating only the uppermost layer (epidermis) of your skin. This acne scar removal procedure is best suited for recent or superficial scarring. Chemical peels are used to improve the texture of facial skin and lighten acne scars. A chemical peel uses a chemical solution to dissolve the upper layer of the skin allowing the smoother healthy skin below to take its place.  Although there are various chemical peels available, Alphahydroxy acid peels are the most popular as they are relatively mild and also help to prevent acne.

Including foods like cantaloupe, carrots and pumpkin which are rich in beta carotene in your diet has been proven to reduce acne. If you decide to go in for a cosmetic procedure make sure that you discuss the risks and with your dermatologist first. There are also various topical creams and natural treatments to prevent and treat acne as well as eliminate mild acne scars.
