Maintaining Black Hair, Tips to maintain Black Hair Color, Protect Hair from Sunlight

Hi, my hair is oily and I can find it turning brownish.

What to do to keep my hair black?

Black hair turning brown is one of the commonest side effects of the sun’s rays. Although we do not realize this as it gradually happens over a period of many years, most of the time black hair loses its lustrous color when we repeatedly expose it to the sun. Maintaining black hair color along with the luster is essential for hair care. The sun works slowly towards leeching the dark color and making it lighter and lighter with time.

For most part, the process is quite irreversible, unless you can manage to sit indoors all the time and not expose your hair to the sun!

Tips to maintain Black Hair Color

You can take some basic steps to ensure that you protect your hair color. The first thing to do is to make sure that your hair is clean at all times. If you have oily hair, then you must wash it frequently and keep it relatively oil free. For most part, oily hair does not require application of hair oil. So if you are doing this, it would be best to stop. You can use hair oil perhaps once a week at most. And even then, you must wash it off after a couple of hours, maximum. Your scalp or your hair does not need oil more than this.

You can also try to regain the color of your hair by protecting it from the sun as much as you can. Wear a scarf to provide a filter from the sun’s rays. If you cannot, carry an umbrella, particularly when you know you will be out in the sun for long periods of time. You should particularly avoid going out in the sun between noon and 4 pm, as these are the hours when the sun’s rays are at their harshest. It is best to avoid the sun at these times, even for the safety and good health of your skin. To try and darken the color of your hair, you can apply Indian gooseberry to it. This is the only known remedy that can permanently re-dye your hair. But you should also know that this will take a very long time to show effects. So you need to keep at it. Make a paste of gooseberry powder and water and apply this to your scalp and strands. Leave it on for a couple of hours and then wash off with plain water. This will clean your hair and scalp and will also ensure thick and lustrous hair.
