I'm a 14 year old girl and I have been facing hair fall and breakage - Is it OK for me to oil my hair daily? How else can I improve my hair condition?

You should know that a certain amount of hair fall and breakage is fairly common at all ages.



Only if you are facing an excessive or unusual amount of hair fall should you worry about it. There is absolutely no necessity to apply oil to your hair on a daily basis. In fact, it is inadvisable to do so. If your hair and roots are constantly clogged with oil, this may hamper the growing process of your hair.



If your hair is constantly devoid of fresh air, then the growth will automatically slow down. It is also important for you to know that oil cannot work on your hair and scalp beyond a period of a couple of hours, or overnight, at most. Therefore, keeping the oil on all the time will not only be counter productive, it will in effect be useless as well. A scalp that is constantly coated with oil will also attract more dirt particles to stick to it and cause an unhealthy environment. You may develop other related problems such as dandruff and a dirty scalp. Oiling your hair once or twice a week should be sufficient to keep your hair and scalp healthy. Also, you only have to leave the oil on overnight for it to work. It is not necessary to keep it on all day.

To improve the general condition of your hair, you should increase your intake of vitamin A. This would mean consuming more of fresh fruits and vegetables and their juices. Try to eat as much as you can of vegetables and fruits like papaya, carrots, musk melon, peaches, apples and pumpkin. All of these products contain essential nutrients that are required to enrich your hair. You should also make it a point to not tie your hair too tightly, as this will cause breakage of the longer strands. Avoid using plastic combs and brushes, as these will build more static in your hair and cause it to lose good health. Use wooden combs and brushes instead. You should also use wide tooth combs as opposed to fine ones, as the latter will break your strands. Keep your hair well trimmed. This will add to the health of your hair and will prevent you from getting split ends. Also avoid using hair dryers and curling irons, which will damage your hair in the long run. You are better off letting your hair stay away from all of these as much as possible.
