Hair Mask A hair mask is similar to a hair conditioner with the main difference being that a hair mask is used for deep conditioning.
While a conditioner is only left on for a couple of minutes, a hair mask is generally rinsed out only after an hour or more. Hair masks are meant for the sole purpose of replenishing lost nutrients and oils thereby repairing damaged follicles and making hair healthier.
Hair Masks for Hair Care Natural homemade hair masks would be the best option but they may be a little messy.
You can also opt for a readymade hair mask but make sure that it is a branded product that does not contain perfumes or colorants. Cheaper hair masks use harsh chemicals that can damage your hair. Exposure to sunlight causes vitamins within the hair follicle to degrade, causing it to become lifeless and dull. Harsh shampoos and conditioners that contain strong chemicals strip the hair of its natural oils leaving it coarse and brittle. Use a hair mask at least once a week to ensure that your hair remains healthy and retains its luster and bounce.
When making a mask for your hair, select ingredients that are meant for your hair type. If you have oily hair, use citrus juices to degrease your hair and reduce sebum levels. Honey, olive oil and almond are best suited for normal hair while avocados, yogurt and fresh cream provide natural fatty acids for people who have dry or frizzy hair.
If you have dry or damaged hair, try to use a hair mask at least twice a week for the first month or so. Make sure that your hair mask includes bananas as they contain many amino acids including tryptophan which helps to nourish and strengthen the hair shaft. Bananas also contain vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C and vitamin E as well as natural oils that increase the elasticity of your hair, reducing breakage.
Hair is made of keratin which is a protein, therefore using hair masks that contain proteins will help to repair damage faster. Egg yolks are very high in proteins and so you can use it to increase the protein content in your hair mask. Allow freshly pressed coconut milk to cool for about thirty minutes in your fridge. Use the layer of cream that forms on the surface of the coconut milk in your hair mask as this cream contains a number of different fatty acids. You can add henna powder to your mask to make a hair color mask that will color and nourish your hair naturally. |
