Makeup

For acne-prone or oily skin, the best kind of foundation is oil-fee (duh), matte or semi-matte.

To overcome the fact that they do not cover as well or last as long as oil-based foundation, a loose transparent powder may be dusted over it. Use sheer foundation if there are a lot of whiteheads or blackheads. Inflamed acne and acne scars may need a cake-based foundation, or a silicone-based one. Some products that may be considered include Almay Oil Control Makeup or Estee Lauder Demi-Matte.

Normal skin works best with moist, semi-matt foundation with not too much oil used moderately. It will serve mainly to even out the skin tone rather than the texture. This type of foundation wears well and covers admirably. Also, a strict no-astringent practice would benefit you better.

Dry skin will benefit most from an oil-based foundation, although a water-based foundation with a bit of oil will also work. The idea is to keep the skin moist and blooming without resembling a skillet, so a semi-matt finish could be considered, which is also easier to apply. For very dry skin, the heavier, creamier soufflé foundation might work better although it may rather call attention to whatever wrinkles that may be present. If that’s a problem, consider applying moisturizer under a regular cream-based foundation. Products to consider include Elizabeth Arden’s Liquid Perfection and CoverGirl MoistureWear Cream. Any other make-up should also be oil-based to ensure it does not “float” on the foundation.

Most people however are neither here nor there. Most have combination or mixed skin, especially those between 25 and 45 years of age, where the slick is concentrated on the T-zone, which is the forehead, the nose and the chin as well as the central cheek area. This is where astringent and moisturizer are most useful. Both should be applied at the appropriate areas prior to foundation application. The best type of foundation would be a water-based cream or powder foundation with an opaque or semi-matt finish. Products to be considered include Max Factor’s Pan-stick Makeup or Revlon’s Powdercreme Makeup.

For any areas that may need some additional attention, powders and blushes can even out these problems without going back to the foundation. Transluscent finishing powder may be applied sparingly over all kinds of skin types to provide a natural look. As much as possible, cosmetics should not be retained on the face for a prolonged period of time. Ensure that every vestige is removed before turning in for the night, especially oil-based materials that tend to cling more tenaciously. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, however. Consider the use of special make-up removers, especially for waterproof make-up.
