Treatment of Dead Skin Cells Dead skin is a natural product of the skin’s growth processes, and these dead skin cells are constantly shed by our bodies.
However, the shedding of these cells is usually incomplete, and the dead skin that remains tends to cause certain problems — the skin may look dry, rough, dead, and uneven, and pores may get clogged, causing pimples to break out. Many people therefore use various dead skin removal techniques to make the process of getting rid of dead skin more efficient and thorough.
Dead Skin Removal The method of removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin is known as exfoliation.
There are a variety of exfoliation products available on the market, and you should select one that suits your purposes and your skin type. Mechanical exfoliants typically contain tiny particles of some substance, and when rubbed on the body, the abrasive action gets rid of dead skin. Pumice stones and pumice based products are usually better for tough skin such as that on the soles of the feet, but are not advisable for sensitive areas such as the face. Even if you have sensitive or dry skin in general, you should avoid such harsh products. In order to be environmentally friendly, you should also avoid using exfoliants that contain polyethylene particles.
If you have an acne problem, a chemical exfoliant might be more effective, particularly one containing salicylic acid. These products remove dead skin by chemically loosening the dead skin cells from the surface, and salicylic acid is known to be a good treatment for pimples. Once again however, if you have sensitive skin, you might need to avoid chemical exfoliants or at least choose the most mild products available. There are also a number of home made preparations that you can use as exfoliants. A little baking soda mixed with water works very well, as does a mixture of sugar and oil. Using a loofah when bathing is also a good way to get rid of dead skin all over the body.
After exfoliation is done, you should always moisturize your skin in order to prevent it from drying out. This ensures that the rate at which skin cells die is slow, and helps your skin look much healthier. Toners are also often recommended after exfoliation, in order to close the skin pores before using the moisturizer. This ensures that the pores are not blocked by oil and dead skin. |
