Capillary Abnormality and Pain in the Limbs

The Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that is characterized by disability of the legs and huge port stains on the affected part.

This congenital condition which is seen at birth, severely affects the blood cells and lymph nodes and the surrounding soft tissue of the body. There are various blood vessel deformities observed on the skin and a big amount of skin discoloration is observed. Due to the lymph nodes being affected varicose veins are formed and an excess development of bones and soft tissue is generated in the places where there is marked increase in blood vessels.

Although it is commonly observed in lower limbs among those affected, it can also affect the internal organs or any other part of the body. Most causes of Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome happen for no obvious reason, in spite of the fact that a few incidents are known to be familial disorders. But this could mean that the either of the parent may be a carrier without necessarily displaying any symptoms in their lifetime.

There are no mental problems associated with this syndrome, in spite of the physical disabilities. However there may be psychological issues related to the appearance and overall well-being of the individual. The main important features of this ailment could comprise capillary abnormality or lack of capillary formation. These malformations are characterized by a broad surface that is either pink, red or purple in color which can be seen at birth usually is spread over a wide area of the afflicted limb. These visual abnormalities do not go away and instead grow along with the child over the years. The lymphatic malformation including cysts and swelling are also characteristics of this condition. Enlarged superficial veins can also be seen on the affected leg and in addition to it sometimes there is extra development of one or more limbs usually involving legs. However it is also seen in excess bone formation in the thorax and upper limb.

This condition is a cause for worry as clots in the blood and skin infections are commonly seen in patients and could lead to serious complications. One of the most common features is the pain that is associated in the affected limb. The severe pain and heaviness sometimes gets unbearable is difficult to treat. Unfortunately there is no cure for this condition. It can be managed with a combination of various therapies and surgical measures, but beyond that it cannot be reversed or stopped. Moreover what makes this condition even more complicated is the involvement of abnormal blood and lymph nodes that leave no room for providing wither symptomatic relief without causing some other complication.
