Causes and Cure for Lichen simplex chronicusLichen simplex chronicus also known as an obstinate skin disorder is distinguished by its long-lasting and recurrent symptoms of constant itching and scratching.
Over a period of time through repeated scratching, the affected skin gets darkened and thick and somewhat leathery in texture. The skin condition that develops is not a serious disorder, but the repeated scratching is bound to lead to further infection.
Also, it gets difficult to break the itching and scratching routine as the itch can be very annoying to control.
The most effective form of treatment for Lichen simplex chronicus would be to identify the factors causing it and trying to eliminate it that is causing the aggravation. There are a number of creams and applications that can be used to eliminate the itching but the skin take a very long time to return to normal.
The dark patches on the skin generally tender to be darker than normal skin appearance and also appear red and raw because of constant friction in the particular area. Lichen simplex chronicus usually affects the neck, the wrists, lower arms, thigh or ankle. The condition can also affect the genital area especially the vulva or the scrotum.
The itchiness that is associated with the disorder follows a kind of repetitive cycle and tends to come and go periodically. Mostly the itchiness sets in when the person is resting either watching television or sleeping and tends to stop bothering when the person is active. Stress factors and anxiety can cause the itchiness to get even worse. Moreover the itchiness tends to worsen further after repeated itching thus affecting the texture of the skin in the long run.
In some cases Lichen simplex chronicus is related to other skin disorders such as dry skin, eczema or psoriasis but strangely allergies are not associated with the condition.
A diagnosis of Lichen simplex chronicus is normally conducted depending upon the individual's skin appearance and a study of a history of any known skin disorders occurred in the past.
A skin tissue sample is most likely to take place and the tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis. Doctors usually prescribe hydrocortisone ointments to ease out the itchiness and the swelling.
Medicated cleansers and lotions including coal tar is also quite useful in treating Lichen simplex chronicus. in severe cases, steroidal injections are also given in the particular area to bring down the itching sensation while some patients may also be required to take anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication. |
