Scleroderma-Connective Tissue Disorder and Scleroderma Complications

Scleroderma Treatment - Obtain Relief from Scleroderma Complications

Scleroderma is an uncommon, gradually advancing disorder that causes hardening or thickening of skin tissue and stiffening up of the skin.

The disease typically begins as some dry patches of skin that tend to get harder and thicker in a while. These patches are usually noticed on the hands and on the face. Under medical conditions, this disorder falls in the group of arthritic diseases known as connective tissue disorder.

When a person is afflicted with scleroderma, the antibodies start to attack the bodily tissues.

Scleroderma has no specific cause for its occurrence. It is more commonly seen in women rather than in men and adults are usually affected by it. Although the disease is seen in family groups sometimes it can occur even without a family history of the disease.

The disease is neither malignant nor infectious but a chronic case would greatly hamper the individual's day to day activity and also bring some sort of psychological trauma owing to lack of confidence and ability. The patient also experiences numbness and discoloration in the limbs, nose, cheeks and ears and frequent experience of pain in these areas. Moreover cold weather or emotional stress tends to heighten these changes. The fingers and toes tend to curl an become stiff in the joints and there is much difficulty in moving these parts of the body also because of the soreness that sets in these parts. doe to the slowdown of muscular activity, digestion also suffers and there is delayed absorption of nutrients in the individual's body.

Among patients suffering from scleroderma, it is observed that collagen tends to get overproduced and accumulated in the body tissues. Even though the medical field is at a loss to pinpoint the exact cause of this malady, the autoimmune system plays a major culprit in this role. But again it is not known why the immune system starts to attack the body tissues. When it starts a full blow onslaught, the attack affects every part of the body and almost every organ gets hampered in the ensuing process. Because there is no reason to point out the disease, the cure is just as elusive. Researchers are still battling on the genetic level seeking answers to the body's aggressive stand against itself since the overproduction of collagen cannot be stemmed. Although there are alternative treatments including some sort of physical exercise and simple body techniques to help the motor ability, the cure is largely out of sight. There are therapies to help patients live easier with the disorder by offering symptomatic relief.
