Symptoms of Varicose Veins

In most people who are affected with varicose veins there are no obvious symptoms apart from the appearance of the swollen veins that look twisted just beneath the skin.

Some people also experience a host of other symptoms associated with varicose veins. These symptoms include -
  • A dull throbbing ache in areas affected with varicose veins
  • Swollen feet and ankles due to fluid retention.

Fluid retention takes place because of the stagnant blood that leaks through the walls of the veins into the surrounding tissues
  • An overall feeling of malaise and sometimes heaviness, fatigue, and dull aching. These symptoms are usually seen at the end of the day or if the person has had to stand for prolonged periods o time during the course of the day
  • Continuous itching sensation around the skin of the affected area
  • Changes in the color of the skin color. The that is just above the affected area of varicose veins is likely to show some sort of discoloration such as a brownish gray, particularly seen around the ankles

Varicose veins often advance, which is indication that the current symptoms may worsen over a period of time. Significant complexities are connected to advanced and more severe types of varicose veins. These complications that take place because of advanced varicose veins are bleeding, ulcers on the affected leg and phlebitis.

Since the varicose veins are visible beneath the skin due to its weakened thin walls, it is likely that a bump or scratch in the area may cause the skin to break upon and induce severe bleeding. Severe bleeding occurs because of the abnormal amount of high pressure in the varicose veins as compared to healthy veins.

Phlebitis is also known as inflammation of a vein. One type of phlebitis that is known to afflict varicose veins is superficial thrombophlebitis. Superficial thrombophlebitis means the inflammation of a vein that is connected to the shaping of a blood clot. The blood clot is usually a semisolid collection of coagulated red and white blood cells. When these clots develop in the veins that are close to the surface of the body, inflammation and swelling is likely to form along the affected patch of the vein. Superficial thrombophlebitis is not a life threatening condition, as compared to deep vein thrombosis.

Ulcers, blisters or open wounds (open sores) is an unmanageable complications caused due to advanced varicose veins. Ulcers are usually seen forming in patients who are elderly. The troublesome part of ulcers is its recurrent nature.
