Skin Sweating Disorder

Sweating is a normal bodily function which involves the sweat glands producing sweat which is excreted through the skin.

The main purpose of sweating is to cool down the body in cases where the core body temperature rises beyond what is normal. The cooling down effect is due to the evaporation of the sweat from the skin which carries away the heat from the body. As a heat management system, sweating is one of the finest in biological design.

However, some people can experience excessive sweating disorders.

Also known as hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is actually something that anybody can experience especially in times of extreme anxiety or when the body fights off a fever. Excessive sweating is considered a disorder when it is experienced chronically, without any apparent cause for it.

Obviously, sweating excessive amounts habitually can cause a lot of problems for a person. For one thing, it can be socially awkward to always have sweaty hands. Hands are usually used for the common handshake which can be exceedingly awkward if the hands are sweaty. Furthermore, sweat can also encourage the growth of bacteria on the skin which can cause offensive body odor. Not only that, but the buildup of bacteria from sweating excessive amounts of sweat can result in skin infections.

Excessive sweating usually affects certain areas of the skin such as in the soles of the feet, the groin, the armpits and the palms of the hand. They may occur only in specific areas or in all of them. Also, they may affect the entire body as well.

There is still a lot of debate about the exact cause of excessive sweating is. Some cases are triggered by emotional states while others seem to be rooted on certain environmental triggers such as foods and smells. However, there have been some treatments that can offer relief for those who suffer from the disorder.

The plethora of treatments available to stop sweating excessively is often tailored to the person who suffers from the condition. Specific factors that are considered are the medical history of the person, their age and their general health status. The severity of the condition and the probable cause of the condition are also factors to consider.

Some treatments for this skin sweating disorder include surgical removal of the sweat glands, application of methenamine solution to the area where excessive sweating occurs and psychological counseling to target the anxiety triggers for some excessive sweating disorder patients.
