This is sometimes referred to as an epidermoid cyst. The cyst is actually a sac that contains a yellowish substance. This substance is known as keratin and it often emits a foul smell. When you try to feel the lump or the sac gently, you can feel it moving freely underneath your skin. This is usually the cause of hair follicles, which have grown swollen. It may also be caused by trauma or blow to the skin.

This cyst is different from an ovarian cyst. The latter grows within the ovary of a woman, while the sebaceous cyst grows underneath the skin. When you are not careful, infections may occur especially when you keep on touching the lump. Removing it out of annoyance can also be dangerous.

A sebaceous cyst is manifested through a tiny lump under your skin. You will know that the lump is infected when notice the following symptoms: tenderness and redness of the lump, it is hot to the touch, and a bad smelling substance comes out from it.

Diagnosing a sebaceous cyst is easy for experts. However, a biopsy is done so as not to confuse it with other types of skin problems. If the diagnosis of your doctor is truly sebaceous cyst, then you can ask for advices on how to treat it.

Your specialist may tell you that the lumps mostly fade away by themselves, and are not hazardous. But when these turn swollen and infected, and you are affected greatly, then you need to have it removed surgically. You can ask your specialist to have the lumps removed, especially when these are interfering with your daily activities.

When the sebaceous cyst gets infected, it may turn into an abscess. This can be really painful and uncomfortable. In this case, it is essential to have the lumps removed through surgery. After the surgery, you can have the lumps checked by your specialist, just to make sure that they won't recur.
